Richmond, Virginia

Richmond is the
capital of Virginia and has played an important part in the history of the
United States, as well as being the capital of the Confederate States of
America. Originally settled in 1609, near a large Native American
settlement, it was founded in 1737 and was the capital of the colony and
Virginia Dominion in 1780. Patrick Henry gave his famous speech here in
1775, and Thomas Jefferson wrote the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom
in 1779. Left over landmarks from the civil war era are the capitol
building and the White House of the Confederacy. Today, it is closely tied
to Washington D.C. and is home to many of the government's agencies. One of
the twelve Federal Reserve Banks is located here, as well as 9 companies
listed in the Fortune 500 and 13 in the Fortune 1000. Tourism is very
important here, since it is such a historical city with many wonderful
architectural buildings that are part of the National Historical Register.
Rich in the history of the country and famous by the
men that grew and participated in the American Revolution, this city grew
through the years, much as our country grew. Being involved in all the
important events that transpired in the United States, Richmond has
developed into one of the most important cities in the country. About a
quarter of the city was burned after the Civil War by retreating rebels, but
was restored over the reconstruction years. Because of its unique location,
with the James River and the city's close proximity to the ocean, and the
advent of the railroad, the city has grown into a great commercial and
financial center, not to mention its close ties to the country's capital.
Beginning in the 21st century, the city has undergone a
redevelopment trend with many projects enlarging the city and improving the
popularity of its historical sights. Riverside on the James is a great
example of this initiative which was completed in 2005 at a cost of over $90
million dollars. Now the city has canal boat tours, walking tours, unique
loft apartments, residential and office complexes, restaurants, boutiques,
hotels and shops that are interspersed all through the area. With
Interstate 95 and 64 the city is very accessible and with the falls nearby,
a very picturesque city. That is probably why the Native Americans enjoyed
the area so many years earlier. And the fragrant weed known as tobacco
which the Indians grew.
Home to a U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Genworth
Financial, Philip Morris USA, CapitalOne and many more; it is also home to
some of the biggest law firms in the nation; McGuireWoods, Williams, Mullen
and LeClairRyan, Troutman Sanders, an international law firm, Hunton &
Williams and Allen, Allen, Allen & Allen. It is also a epicenter for
advertising companies, most especially the Martin Agency. A large
developing biotech park opened in 1995, called the Virginia BioTechnology
Research Park with many growing firms located here. It is close by the
Medical College of Virginia Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. The
Network for Organ Sharing occupies one of the buildings, as does Phillip
Morris.

A National Historic landmark, the
White House of the Confederacy and museum is an ostentatious building that
is one of the best historic, architectural and decorative treasures of the
nation. Built in 1818, this marvelous masterpiece now houses the most
majestic collection of Confederate memorabilia in the world. With a history
as rich and colorful as the city, this museum went through its own series of
ups and downs before being designated a national landmark. It is said that
Lincoln went to Richmond immediately following Lee's surrender, to sit at
the desk that Jefferson Davis sat at, for unfathomable reasons or just to
signify to the world that now the United States was back together, although
it would never be the same, nor should it.

now showcases the great relics, pictures and verses that created Edgar Allen
Poe, while he lived in Richmond. Containing the biggest collection of Poe
artifacts in the world, the museum is a fantastic journey into the mind and
life of this great writer. His walking stick is there where he left it, two
weeks before his mysterious death. A lock of hair cut by a friend and his
trunk key that was found in his pocket also rest in this museum. Many first
editions are found here, including; an 1845 copy of the Raven and other
Poems, Tamarlane, published in 1827 and a flop, but one of the rarest and
