The grand city of Kissimmee has been around since the mid 1900s. It was originally called Allendale, before the town became a city in 1883. The area at that time was primarily a swampland, where houses sought to build on any part of the land that wasn’t… well sinking. A man named Hamilton Disston saw profit in draining the area of its swamp waters, and in the mid 1800s cleared most of Central Florida. He struck a deal with Florida that he would be given half of any land drained. Over the years he drained two-million acres using his method, and his operation made him the largest land owner in all of the United States. Hamilton realized that for his business to be successful he would need steamboats to run his operation. He invested in several, and he made good use of them by occupying the top decks with passengers while running his business below. Hamilton single handedly brought about the expansion of the Kissimmee and Orlando area.

Now nearly a hundred years later the Central Florida area has become the most visited tourist location in the world!
