Keywest Attractions and Things to See

Key West is a popular Florida island directly off the Straits. It is located at the southernmost tip of the well known Florida Keys. The beautiful island is only a small four miles long and two miles narrow. The island was originally much smaller, but many of the smaller islands were connected, and later filled in nearly doubling the original land masses size. The actual city of Key West encompasses just a small portion on the tip of Stock Island where Key West is located, but most local residents and even vacationists refer to the whole island as “Key West.” The only way to access the island is either by boat or across U.S. 1 a highway that that has an eight mile stretch, one of the longest bridges in the U.S. over the crystal clear waters. If you are staying in the Key West area there is a good chance you will be staying on the main Stock Island, but there is also a good chance that you will be staying on some of the smaller islands around Stock. Either way, you are going to be smelling the great sea air and enjoying the beautiful area! With a population of only 25,000 this hidden gem is a fantastic place for a vacation getaway!

In a pre-Columbian era the beautiful Key West was inhabited by the Native American group know as the Calusa people. The first arrival of a European resident was by Juan Ponce de Leon in the early fifteen hundreds. When Florida gradually became a Spanish territory the area where Key West now resides became a small fishing garrison, a once well known establishment. Cayo Hueso is the original name for the Island of Key West, a Spanish name for Stock Island where the city was constructed. In 1821 the Island was sold to two separate buyers at the exact same time, the victor of the dispute land in the favor of a John W. Simonton, who purchased the island for its key location. Simonton was the first to invest in the establishment and start the city on its way to becoming what it is today. During the civil war the island interestingly enough remained in the hands of the union, despite being located so deep into Confederate territory. An interesting fact about the island is that in 1830 a large number of immigrants from the Bahamas found their way to the island. These immigrants were nicknamed “Conchs” which quickly became a popular name for anyone living in the city. In fact many of the historical sites and even the residents of the island refer to themselves as “Conchs from Key West.”

Key West is located in the Florida Keys, a series of 4500 different islands located at the south end of the state of Florida. The Florida Keys are home to some of the best and most creative entertainment in Florida. The most popular activities in the Key West are to fish or explore the islands. This can be done by bringing your own boat, renting a boat, or the more popular route to charter a boat. Chartering a boat allows you to pay a captain for a short time to take his boat wherever you want. Whether you are diving to see the ocean life or fishing for the variety of fish in the area, even just exploring the keys, a boat charter is the way to go!
