Boston, the capital and
biggest city in the state of Massachusetts is also one of the
oldest cities in the United States, and the biggest city in the
region known as New England, which regards the city as the
unofficial "capital of New England" for the outstanding cultural
and economic impact it has on the region. The city, that sits on
the Shawmut Peninsula, was founded by Puritan colonists from
England in 1630, that grew into a very historical city that had
many significant events happen during the late 18th century that
would include the Boston Tea Party, the Boston Massacre and many
other exciting and historical events. These include the Siege of
Boston, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and historic sites that have
helped make this city one of the most exciting and interesting
in the area, with Fanueil Hall, that brings some 20 million
visitors to the city every year, and home of numerous first
including the first public school, at Boston Latin School, and
the first subway system in the nation that was completed in
1897. It has grown into an international hub for higher
education, as well as a center for medicine, with a local
economy built on high technology more importantly in the field
of biotechnology, research, finance, finance and engineering.
The city's fabulous history will keep visitors coming here busy
for weeks, as it has grown by annexing reclaimed land by using
landfill materials, with many historical and marvelous brick or
stone buildings constructed using the Federal style, and many
others splendid architectural styles as the years progressed.
Boston Common is the oldest public park in the country that sits
next to the Boston Public Garden, with both of them included in
the Emerald Necklace, which were a string of parks designed by
Frederick Law Olmsted that were created to encircle the city.
Jamaica Pond, that is also part of the necklace, is the biggest
freshwater body in the city, and another includes Franklin Park
Zoo, the Esplanade that sits along the banks of the Charles
River, outstanding parks and beaches by Castle Island and the
Hatch Shell that is an outdoor venue next to the Charles River
Esplanade.
The city's cultural scene is second to none, with their unique
eastern New England accent that is known as Boston English and
an amazing local cuisine scene that concentrates on the
availability of fresh and delicious seafood, dairy products and
salt. Irish Americans have been a part of the city's politics
and religious institutions with a superb collection of
neologisms known as Boston slang. There are many elaborate
theaters located throughout the city that include the Citi
Performing Arts Center, the Orpheum Theater, Boston Opera House,
Cutler Majestic Theater, Colonial theater, and famous performing
arts organizations that include the Boston Symphony Orchestra,
the Boston Lyric Opera Company, the Boston Ballet, the Handel
and Haydn Society, Boston Early Music Festival and OperaBoston.
Their yearly events include the Boston Arts Festival, the Fourth
of July, Boston Pops with fireworks on the banks of the Charles,
Harborfest festivities, FirstNight and so much more.
The majority of historic sites that pertain to the American
Revolution have been preserved as part of the fantastic Boston
National Historical Park, the Freedom Trail, the Museum of Fine
Arts and Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Other fabulous sites
include the Institute of Contemporary Art, the John F. Kennedy
Library, Bull & Finch Pub that would become famous for the
television show, Cheers, the Boston Athenaeum that is one of the
oldest independent libraries in the nation, the Museum of
Science, the New England Aquarium and the Boston Children's
Museum. It is a well known religious center, some of the finest
sports teams in the United States that include the Boston Red
Sox, one of the founding members of the American League in 1901,
the Boston Bruins in hockey, the Boston Celtics in basketball,
and the New England Patriots in football. The city also has
teams in soccer, lacrosse, Australian rules football, softball
and others.
