and is situated halfway between Sydney and Brisbane at the
junction of the New England Highway, national route 15 and
Waterfall Way. Called the New England region because of the four
distinct seasons that is unique in the country, but more like
the New England of the United States, with beautiful autumn
colors that have become a featured event in the city. The region
also contains a number of magnificent natural areas that provide
scientific interest and exploration, with many World Heritage
national parks that include the Mount Yarrowyck Nature Preserve,

Park.

New South Wales, and daily buses and local taxis. Cycling is a
very popular way to get around the city, except for the
difficult hills to the north and south of the city that can be
quite challenging, with a wonderful cycleway that runs through
the city.
It became a city in 1885, and since it is the seat of the
Anglican and Roman Catholic bishops of Armidale, it is known as
a cathedral city, that includes the St. Peter's Anglican
Cathedral and the Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Joseph
that was consecrated in 1912. Every March, the city hosts the
Australian Wool Fashion Awards that features the use of Merino
wool, with another called the Autumn Festival now a favorite
event of the citizens. It has parades, celebrations and stalls

with Coles Supermarket and 15 specialty stores, the Centro
Armidale that has Woolworth's, Big W and 32 specialty stores and

One of the most interesting, intriguing and fascinating new
adventures offered in the nation, but more particularly in area
like New South Wales, is called "fossicking" which is sure to
become one of the most favorite and popular new ideas to come to
the realm of tourism. Fossicking is a term from Cornwall and
Australia that refers to "prospecting", and can include fossils,
gold, precious stones, or anything that you consider valuable by
sifting through a prospective area, although the Australians use
the more common term of "rummage", like what many in the states
may call garbage picking, but this is more refined since it
includes searching for gold and other precious metals, rocks or
other valuable articles that are yours when you find. But be
sure to check with the local government before you head out to
check out this outstanding new venture.
